Starting Line

Well, we are back at the starting line and we are in for the long haul.

The surgeon came out to talk to us at around 6:30 (about 5 hours into a 2 hour surgery). He was very nice, but he told us it was much worse than they ever imagined. She had an infection from the top of her neck to the middle of her back. He spent the entire time scraping away bone until he could find no more pus in the upper part of her back. He ended up doing a laminectomy fusion on her upper back. The same thing that she had on her lower back in late October. The same thing that she is still recovering from. So we are starting over.

Except we are further back than before since she has not healed completely from the first one. In fact, when the doctor talked to us he had not even touched the original wound yet. That was what was supposed to take two hours, the flushing out of the original wound to get rid of any infection and the abcesses. He told us that he was going to go back in to the OR and start that in about 45 minutes and it should take about two hours. We promised ourselves that we wouldn't start jumping whenever we saw someone heading this way until around 9pm, but we have already broken that promise about 6 times.

Adrienne and I just went out to Wendy's to grab a bite since we knew it would be awhile, but we are back in the waiting room. A waiting room we have had all to ourselves most of the day. If only there was something decent on TV on a Saturday night.
