Feeling Old

I just got a package delivered to my front door. Its a birthday gift from my girls. Its an I-Pod. A pretty high tech gift for a low tech mentality. I am sure there will come a day when I will like it very much and use it often, but first comes the tedium of learning how to use it. I'm guessing my first lesson should include what/where is a USB port. I think I've got one because Erika plugs in her camera and jump drive while she's here,

Then it will be a matter of locating the music and books to download from the web. I was told it could hold books.

For now, I'll just keep the box here near my computer and look at it to get used to having it. I had a cell phone for almost a year before I made a call, so it could be a while. In my defence, my first cell phone was for emergencies only, I had a 5 minute per month plan and paid $4.95 per month.

So, a big thank you to my wonderful amazon girls. I know they will be providing as much instruction as its going to take to get me up and running.

Happy Birthday. I had wanted to download a few books and some music onto your new ipod, but Erika reminded me that when you hook the ipod to your computer, you register it to that particular computer and I didn't think you wanted to be registered in California. Your really techie daughters live closest to you, so I have every confidence that you will be using your ipod a whole lot quicker than 1 year from now. I think it comes with a cd. If you plug the ipod into the right plug (I just plugged it into anything until it fit) and load the cd, the computer pretty much did the rest. I still had trouble taking things off the ipod when they got on by mistake, but once you learn their import terms it should be ok. If you want to feel like master of the universe and try this without your techie daughters, call Adam on his cell phone and he can walk you right through it. Again, Happy Birthday, Love Kathy

Happy Birthday! You will get the hang of it very quickly. I am sure one of your daughters will be seeing you soon and will walk you through it. This one is very cool too, you can even download some tv shows from itunes and watch them on your ipod since it has video capabilities and you can load pictures to scroll through like your screen saver has.

You got a video one? You lucky thing you. I was going to show you how it could do pictures (mine does pictures) but if you can do video you can just download your Jackson file and you won't need any books.

If Adam hasn't already walked you through everything the first thing you need to do is go to iTunes.com and download iTunes. That is the key to what you load onto your iPod.

For the first thing, my USB port is not strong enough. They recommend USB 2.0 and when I plug in it warns me that my port is not strong enough. It was strong enough to charge the ipod and to download the 2 songs I have in My Music file.

I can't download pictures because I do not have Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0

To download music it says I need Windows XP xervice pack 2 or later. I have no idea whether I have that or not.

I think I have downloaded ITunes because that's what the icon on my desktop says and I can get to the Music Store.

Ah, the Music Store. I can't seem to get anything on offer beyond the R & C (Rap & Crap). I went to the search thing and put in Showtunes, they had no matches. I tried Soundtracks and all I could get was the top 10 movies, none of which interested me. I clicked on country and there was nothing I had ever heard of.

This is a challenge and I have decided to take the rest of the day off.

You set the preferences of your iPod to point to My Pictures and pull pictures from there. I think you have done fine for your first day. I am coming on the 24th (dinner with Anna) in case you haven't figured it out by then.

I'm sure you'll get the hang of that iPod in no time, though I guess getting the stuff you want on there will be the most challenging part. I agree with you about R&C...rap and crap! It seems like that's all there is in music right now, and frankly I hate it. Who says all of my generation is supposed to like that crap anyways??? Oh well, I guess the majority does like that music, so whatever...

Well, I hope you had a Happy Birthday, and I guess I'll talk to you later!!

When I ran the set up it asked if I wanted it to automatically incorporate everything from the My Music file, I said yes. Then it asked if I wanted it to automatically incorporate everything from the My Picture file, I said yes. When I wasn't getting any pictures, I mentioned it to Adrienne and she asked Adam and he said I could just drag them into the Itunes file. It wasn't so.

So I went to the Help file and looked up how to load pictures. It told how to load pictures from a digital camera. What it said was to load the pictures on your computer first and then you could download them directly into the IPod if you had Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0. It didn't give any information on whether you could do pictures if you didn't have Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0, so I'm thinking that's what's needed.

Also, ask Lyle about getting a USB 2.0 card. It mentioned that if your USB port was less than 2.0 you could get an upgrade card.

I can wait till the 24th. In the meantime I will work on perfecting the insertion of the ear buds so they don't fall out constantly.

I hate the ear buds. I have a pair of headphones that I like and I will get you a pair. They hook around the ear and don't fall off. They are also very comfortable. I have not had trouble with the pictures but I will check it out when I get there. I will also bring my CDs. I have never actually bought a song yet. I just loaded all of my CDs into two playlists: Christmas and "Everything Else." Then I hit shuffle and let it play all day long.

cd's are what i use also, adam downloads songs all the time but then again he is into the c part of the r and c. as for the ear buds, i figured out they are ear specific, once i put them each in the correct ear they stayed in much better.
